The Counseling Center is hosting drop-in virtual workshops on a wide range of topics (16 total!) to support your mental health and wellbeing. Click through the tabs below to find out more about information, including topic descriptions, Zoom links, and workshop times.
Please know that this is a skill-building workshop and is not a therapy space. Due to the open and online nature of this support space, this workshop is not private or confidential though participants are encouraged to be respectful and mindful of each other and to practice discretion.
Advanced registration is not required. The workshops will close to new participants 15 minutes after the start of the workshop. Workshops will not occur on university holidays.
The Coping Skills Series will help participants develop a broad range of coping skills applicable to daily life, including managing stress, emotions, and uncertainty, as well as take a deeper dive into the practice of mindfulness.
First Monday of the Month: Coping with Stress
Stress is a ubiquitous part of life. It has a bad reputation but it’s not always a bad thing. Join us to learn about the different types of stress, common reactions to stress, and best practices for coping with various stressors.
Second Monday of the Month: Surviving Difficult Emotions
Sometimes our emotions are so intense, it feels like they will never end. This workshop provides strategies to help understand our emotions and to cope with the associated discomfort and distress.
Third Monday of the Month: Navigating Uncertainty
Every day we face uncertainty about things big (how long will this pandemic last?) and small (how did I do on that paper?). This workshop provides skills to help you accept and cope with uncertainty.
Fourth Monday of the Month: Mastering Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness can help you manage your emotions, accept your reality, and stay grounded. Learn techniques to build your mindfulness skills and practice with brief mindful meditations during the workshop.
This workshop series is all about improving your academic performance with skills for success. We will help you get organized, get focused, and get motivated to take charge of your academic life.
First Tuesday of the Month of the Month: Time Management
This workshop will help you prioritize your obligations and organize your schedule so that you can take care of responsibilities in a timely manner and make time for self-care too!
Second Tuesday of the Month: Conquer Procrastination Now (Not Later)
Getting started is sometimes the hardest part. This workshop will explore underlying causes of procrastination and provide specific techniques to end the cycle of unrealistic expectations and avoidance that inhibits productivity.
Third Tuesday of the Month: Pay Attention! Tips to Improve Focus
In a world full of distractions, it’s easy to lose focus. This workshop will provide helpful strategies to improve concentration and let go of distractions.
Fourth Tuesday of the Month: Successful Study Skills
Not all study strategies are created equal! Learn about best practices for note-taking, paper-writing, studying, and more.
The Relationships and Communication Series will focus on the ins and outs of relationships, from conflict to communication to connection. We will offer tips for healthy interactions and help you get the most out of your relationships, in person and virtual.
First Wednesday of the Month: Effective Communication Skills
Communication is at the core of all of our relationships. Explore the different styles of communication, see which styles you use the most, and learn about best practices for communicating with the people around you.
Second Wednesday of the Month: Managing Conflict and Setting Boundaries
This workshop will describe healthy and unhealthy types of conflict, explore strategies for setting (and being on the receiving end of) boundaries, and provide best practices for conflict resolution.
Third Wednesday of the Month: Staying Connected in a Distanced World
It is especially difficult to stay connected with people at a time when we have to be physically apart. Join us in talking through strategies for how to stay socially connected even when physically distant.
Fourth Wednesday of the Month: Deepening Relationships through Vulnerability
If you are looking to have stronger and more authentic relationships, join us to explore how vulnerability can help you feel more deeply connected to the people in your life. This workshop is interactive and experiential.
The Resilience and Adaptability Series will explore the ways that our expectations affect us in everyday life. We will highlight some common unrealistic ways of thinking and provide skills to become more resilient and face life head on!
First Thursday of the Month: Freedom from Perfectionism
This workshop will explore how perfectionism impacts students and provide strategies to help you embrace imperfection in yourself and others.
Second Thursday of the Month: Dealing with Disappointment
This workshop will help you manage life's frustrations and bounce back from disappointment when things don't go the way you want or expect. Coping skills like mindfulness, gratitude, and growth mindset will help you come to term with these feelings and find your "grit" to move forward.
Third Thursday of the Month: Taking Control of Your Thoughts
We’ll help you control your thoughts so they are not controlling you. This workshop will provide concrete techniques for recognizing, understanding, and altering unhelpful patterns of thinking.
Fourth Thursday of the Month: Tackling Life Transitions
Adjusting to new life circumstances can often take more of a toll than we imagine. This workshop will explore common reactions to life transitions and helpful strategies to cope with new circumstances while getting adjusted.
We know it’s tough to stay socially connected during the pandemic. Join us each week for an informal space to connect with and support one another. Unlike the other series, this space will not be a workshop but just a place to join together in community.
