Consultation Services

Often, people who interact closely with students, such as UMD faculty/staff and family members or friends of students, will be the first to know when a student is having mental health challenges that may be impacting their academic success or daily lives. The Counseling Center provides consultation to assist these individuals in supporting a student who may be experiencing concerns.

Warmline: A Non-Emergency Consultation Service
Phone Number: (301) 314-7651

The Counseling Center’s Warmline is a non-emergency consultation service for those concerned about a UMD student’s mental health. Warmline callers can speak with a counselor to explore options for helping the student of concern address their difficulties.

Who can call the Warmline?

  • UMD faculty/staff who are concerned about a student
  • Family members of UMD students who are concerned about their student
  • Friends/peers of UMD students who are concerned about the student

Examples of student-related concerns discussed by Warmline callers:

  • Signs of anxiety and depression
  • Assistance with encouraging a student to seek mental health treatment
  • Social withdrawal or difficulty making friends
  • Disruptive behavior in the classroom
  • Substance use concerns
  • Declining academic performance or class attendance
  • Indication of suicidal thoughts or thoughts of violence

How do I contact the Warmline?

The Warmline is available during our regular hours of operation by calling the Counseling Center at (301) 314-7651 and asking to speak with a counselor about your student-related concern. Our receptionist will take your information and a brief description of your concern to provide to one of our counselors, who will contact you within 24 hours of your call. UMD students who are concerned about a fellow UMD student may come in person to the Shoemaker Building to consult.

What if my concern for a student appears to be an immediate emergency?

The Warmline is not a crisis line. If someone is experiencing an emergency or life-threatening situation, please call the campus police department at 911 (from an on-campus phone) or (301) 405-3333 (from off-campus phone) or assist the person in getting to the nearest hospital emergency room.
