Here at University of Maryland, we pride ourselves on being a comprehensive Counseling Center with extensive expertise and specialization in college student mental health and well-being. As such, we provide clinical services to the student community, engage in outreach, education, and prevention activities to increase awareness of mental health issues in our community and foster campus well-being, and train the new generation of mental health clinicians. This tremendous work is done through the close collaboration between our Initial Access Team, our On-Going Care Team, our Care Management team, our Embedded Clinical Team, our Mental Health Emergency Assessment and Response Team, our Research Unit, and our Administrative Team. Together, we strive to address the mental health needs of our students and to foster a culture of well-being and care on the campus.

I would be remiss if I were to not mention the critical partnerships with key stakeholders across the campus that help facilitate and add to the tremendous work done by the Counseling Center. The student voice is consistently heard and integrated into the growth and development of the Counseling Center through our partnership with the Student Government Association, the Graduate Student Government, the Resident Hall Association, and the Counseling Center Student Advisory Board.

Once again, I want you to know that we are here for you, ready to support your academic success, and the growth and development that you will no doubt experience throughout your tenure as a student at the University of Maryland. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Good luck!

Our Mission

The University of Maryland Counseling Center advances the University’s mission of excellence in teaching, research, and service by providing comprehensive psychological services designed to support the mental health, personal development, and academic success of our diverse student community.

Our dedicated team supports the university's academic mission through consultation, outreach, and collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff, administrators, and families. Committed to continuous growth, our staff actively pursues ongoing professional development to deepen our knowledge and enhance our multicultural competencies. We offer inclusive services and programs that honor the diverse experiences of our students, ensuring a safe, welcoming space where every voice is heard, valued, and accepted.

By integrating research, teaching, and supervised training for emerging professionals, the Counseling Center reinforces the core values of our institution and the mental health profession.

Scope of Services

As the primary campus provider of psychological and consultation services, the Counseling Center offers free and confidential mental health services to registered UMD students.

In addition to our clinical services for students, the Counseling Center provides outreach programming to the larger campus community. We also offer consultation regarding student mental health to UMD faculty and staff as well as family members of students.

A Short-Term Model

The Counseling Center utilizes a short-term model to provide mental health services to students. As such, after a comprehensive brief assessment in which our counselors assess the nature and degree of concerns, students who would benefit from short-term services will be recommended one of several short-term clinical services that we offer.

Students who would benefit from more frequent, specialized, or open-ended services are best served by mental health providers in the local community. Our dedicated care management team provides referral services to students best served by community providers.

Accreditation
