Outreach Programming

Home Outreach & Consultation Outreach Programming

Outreach programming helps the Counseling Center reach the entire campus community, not only those who seek counseling services. We promote mental health across campus through programming that educates, raises awareness, and reduces stigma, with a particular focus on improving and maintaining student wellbeing. The Counseling Center is a member of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Outreach (AUCCCO).

T.E.R.P.S. for Terps Suicide Prevention

The Counseling Center’s Training to Evaluate, Respond to, and Prevent Suicide (T.E.R.P.S.) for Terps program helps faculty and staff learn how to identify student mental health challenges, including suicidal thoughts, and respond with empathy and appropriate resources and referrals. This 3-hour training is currently offered in person to university faculty and staff. Contact our outreach coordinator at aasarch@umd.edu to learn more about accessing this training.

The Wellness Series

The Counseling Center provides drop-in virtual skills sessions on a wide range of topics to support your mental health and wellbeing. Click the link below to find more information, including topic descriptions, Zoom links, and schedule.

Campus Crisis Response

In the event of emergency situations or traumatic events that affect members of the campus community, Counseling Center staff are available to provide crisis response to students, faculty, and staff. We will work with university administrators and stakeholders to determine those who are affected by the event and make an informed decision about how to best support them in the hours or days that follow.

Depending on the nature of the incident, Counseling Center staff may respond by facilitating a group intervention, such as a processing space, or may be present to offer support when university faculty or staff share news of a traumatic event with students. Multiple responses for different groups may occur following an event with a significant impact on the campus community. Additionally, affected individuals may be referred for urgent services at the Counseling Center.

Requests for campus crisis response can be made by calling the Counseling Center at (301) 314-7651 or by directly contacting your Counseling Center dyad partner.

Request an Outreach Program

Outreach presentations may be requested by student organizations, UMD departments, and other groups in the campus community to be conducted at the location of your choice on campus (reserved by you). There is no fee for a Counseling Center outreach presentation. We offer programs on mental health topics such as Coping with Stress, Overview of Counseling Center Services, Helping Students in Distress, Time Management, and more.

In addition to providing outreach to specific groups, the Counseling Center participates in tabling events where students can learn about Counseling Center services.

To request an outreach program or participation at your event, please submit an Outreach RequestPlease provide at least three weeks notice when submitting your request.
