Roe vs Wade Statement

Counseling Center Logo

The University of Maryland Counseling Center staff offers its unwavering support and care for the campus community in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. We recognize that our community will have strong emotional reactions of all kinds. Some may experience anger, sadness, fear, and disbelief in response to the change in federal protection for reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy that had existed for 50 years. Additionally, we recognize that the change in federal precedent affects marginalized women and birthing people the most. Indigenous, Black, and other people of color, survivors of sexual assault and violence, and financially disadvantaged members of our communities will also be affected in unique and particularly difficult ways by the Supreme Court’s decision. We further recognize the fear, anger, and uncertainty that members of our LGBTQ+ community may be experiencing in response to the suggestion of a future threat to marriage equality and other human rights for the LGBTQ+ community.

We encourage you to take good care of yourselves and to reach out to those who can best support you during this difficult time. Know that we are here to help you manage whatever feelings you may be experiencing. You can book same-day appointments and access after-hours urgent phone assistance at (301) 314-7651. The Counseling Center is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
