Online At-Risk Training

Online At-Risk Trainings for Faculty and Staff

The Research Unit of the Counseling Center

Kognito is an online, interactive gatekeeper training simulation used at more than 750 campuses nationwide. The University of Maryland Counseling Center and the University Health Center are jointly making this training available to UMD faculty, staff, and students. The 30- to 60-minute self-guided trainings help you talk with students and peers who are exhibiting signs of psychological distress and motivate them to seek appropriate help. Through creative interactive role-play conversations with emotionally responsive avatars, UMD faculty, staff, and students learn about best practices in supporting:

  • Students who struggle with psychological distress, including depression and suicidal ideation
  • Student veterans who are facing challenges in adjusting to college life
  • LGBTQ students who are struggling due to harassment or exclusion

Follow-up Discussions
Campus groups may request a 1-hour discussion about the Kognito material after participants view the trainings. These discussion sessions are facilitated by Counseling Center counselors and may be requested by contacting Dr. Allison Asarch at
